Ophthalmic Procedures
At Douglassville Veterinary Hospital, we offer select ophthalmic procedures to help relieve pain, improve vision, and support your pet’s long-term eye health. Our experienced team will assess your pet’s condition and determine whether surgical correction is the best course of action—or if referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist is more appropriate.
Types of ophthalmic procedures performed at Douglassville Veterinary Hospital:
Entropion Surgery (Select Cases)
Entropion is a condition where the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes and skin to rub against the surface of the eye. This can lead to irritation, excessive tearing, and corneal ulcers. In select cases, we can perform a surgical correction to reposition the eyelid and prevent further discomfort and damage.
Prolapsed Gland of the Third Eyelid (“Cherry Eye”) – (Select Cases)
The third eyelid contains a tear-producing gland that can sometimes pop out of place, creating a red, swollen mass in the corner of the eye—commonly referred to as “cherry eye.” In select cases, we can surgically reposition the gland to restore normal function and appearance, while preserving tear production.
Enucleations
Enucleation is the surgical removal of an eye, typically performed when the eye is severely damaged, infected, or painful and cannot be saved. While it may sound drastic, pets adapt very well to life with one eye and often experience significant relief after surgery.
Corneal Keratotomy
A corneal keratotomy is a procedure used to treat certain types of non-healing corneal ulcers. Tiny scratches or grid patterns are made on the surface of the eye to stimulate healing and help new tissue grow properly. It’s a safe and effective way to encourage recovery and reduce discomfort.
Eyelid Mass Removal
Eyelid mass removal is a surgical procedure to eliminate growths or tumors on the eyelids. While many of these masses are benign, they can cause irritation, interfere with vision, or become infected. Removing them helps protect your pet’s eye health and comfort.
