Fractured(Broken) Teeth are a common problem noted on routine oral exams. Fractured teeth which expose the pulp chamber of the tooth pose a major infection risk to your pet because bacteria travel up the pulp chamber creating a tooth root infection which leads to a pocket of pus around the root of a tooth causing severe pain, bone infection and bone destruction. Facial swelling and pain is sometimes seen with this condition, but often times, x-rays are required to diagnose animals with tooth root abscesses. Treatment requires tooth removal or removal of the infected root along with a root canal.
